CONSORTIUM OF PAIN AND PALLIATIVE CARE UNITS IN ERNAKULAM DISTRICT is a registered charitable Society.

"Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. " (W.H.O Definition : 2002)

"Palliative care provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms. It affirms life and regards dying as a normal process, Intends neither to hasten nor postpone death, Integrates psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care, offers a support system that helps the patient to live as happily as possible till death, offers a support system that helps family cope with patients illness and their own bereavement. The idea is to `add life to their days and not days to their life!"

The Aims of the Society are:

  • * To help patients with chronic diseases and particularly to improve palliative care in patients who have diseases like cancer, AIDS, dementia, rheumaticism etc.
  • * To provide, when necessary, social and financial support for patients with chronic pain or who are in advanced stage of diseases 
  • * To provide possible support for organizations/institutions/individuals working with similar aim as that of the Society 
  • * To help to provide uninterrupted supply of essential drugs for the patients 
  • * To provide essential medical and paramedical manpower for caring the patients 
  • * To organize the follow up of the patients 
  • * To establish and run hospices/similar institutions for palliative care 
  • * To promote and carry out research projects in palliative care relevant to the population in the area of operation 
  • * To organize lectures, conferences, seminars, workshops and other training courses on palliative care for doctors and other health workers  
  • * To educate the relatives of the patients regarding the needs of the patient and to promote palliative care in the family setting  
  • * To create an awareness among the public regarding palliative care
